1) When sown indoors, plant 8-10 weeks before the last frost when the soil temperature is 60-75ºF. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep, 1/4 inch apart. Transplant young seedlings in mid-spring 2-6 inches apart. Use liquid fertilizer every 7-10 days.
2) For direct seeding, plant onions in early to mid-spring when soil temperatures are at least 55ºF. Sow 1-3 seeds per inch spaced 2-6 inches apart. Moderate watering is essential for optimal growth, 1 inch per week.
3) Select fertile, well-drained soil for a good crop of Barletta onions. Apply compost or organic granular fertilizer before planting.
4) Stop watering a week before harvest, and when the greens are completely wilted, pull the onion out of the ground. Dry the crop in the sun for several days.
5) Store in a cool, dark place at 35-40ºF and 65-70% humidity.
