A sage tincture is a classic folk preparation and a simple way to put a sage harvest to use. Some people dilute a little in water to use as a gargle.
Ingredients
- Fresh sage leaves
- 190 proof food grade alcohol
Directions
- Gather a few handfuls of sage leaves, then wash them and let them air dry on towels for a few hours or overnight.
- Chop the sage and pack it into a clean, dry 1 pint glass jar, then cover it completely with the alcohol.
- Cap the jar and keep it in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks, shaking it well every day.
- Line a funnel with cheesecloth and strain the tincture into a dark glass bottle. Amber or cobalt glass helps keep out light, and a dropper lid makes it easy to use.
Grower's tip: sage leaves hold the most essential oil just before the plant flowers, so that is the best time to harvest for a tincture. A single plant will supply you for years.
