Greek dwarf basil (Ocimum basilicum var. minimum) is a compact, globe-shaped basil covered in tiny, intensely aromatic leaves. These non-GMO Greek dwarf basil seeds grow into tidy little mounds just 8–12 inches tall, making them perfect for pots, windowsills, and edging. The small leaves carry a sweet, classic basil flavor with a slightly spicy edge.

Who it's for

Perfect for container gardeners, small-space growers, and cooks who want fresh basil within arm's reach on a patio or kitchen windowsill.

How & when to plant

Start indoors 4–6 weeks before your last frost, or sow directly once soil warms and nights stay above 50°F. Sow 1/4 inch deep and thin plants to 6–8 inches apart in full sun (6+ hours). A tender warm-season annual, it grows well in USDA zones 4–10; keep soil evenly moist and pinch tips to maintain its neat, rounded shape.

Harvest

Leaves are ready in about 55–65 days. Because the leaves are small, harvest whole sprigs by pinching just above a leaf pair rather than picking individual leaves. Frequent trimming and removing flower buds keeps the mound compact and productive.

Benefits & uses

The petite leaves are ideal for tossing whole into salads, pasta, and pizza, or blending into pesto and vinaigrettes. Its neat, bushy form also makes it an attractive ornamental edging plant and a fragrant addition to mixed herb containers.

FAQ

Greek Dwarf Basil forms a tidy, compact globe of tiny, intensely aromatic leaves and rarely grows past 8 to 10 inches tall. Its small size and rounded shape make it ideal for pots, windowsills, and edging.
Yes, it is one of the best basils for a kitchen windowsill because of its naturally compact habit. Give it a sunny south-facing window with 6 or more hours of light, or a grow light, and keep the soil evenly moist.
Start seeds indoors about 6 weeks before your last frost, or sow outdoors once soil is warm and above 65 F. Barely cover the seeds and keep them warm for best germination.
Pinch or snip small sprigs from the outer edges and tops, which encourages the plant to stay bushy and round. Regular light harvesting and removing any flower buds keeps the leaves tender and flavorful.
Because it stays compact, space or thin plants to about 6 to 8 inches apart. In a container, one plant per 6-inch pot gives it room to form a nice round mound.
Yes, Greek Dwarf Basil is an open-pollinated heirloom, and these seeds are non-GMO. You can collect seed from mature plants to grow again next season.
It stays compact at roughly 8–12 inches, forming a dense, rounded mound that suits pots and borders.
Yes. Despite their size, the leaves are very aromatic with a sweet, classic basil taste.
