Honeydew produces smooth, creamy-skinned melons (Cucumis melo) with pale green, exceptionally sweet and juicy flesh. These melon seeds grow round 5–7 lb fruits with a honeyed flavor and firm, refreshing texture that's a summer classic. Green-fleshed honeydew is one of the most popular dessert melons, and homegrown fruit far surpasses store-bought in sweetness.

Who it's for

For gardeners in warm regions who want a rich, sweet dessert melon, and for anyone who enjoys honeydew in fruit salads and fresh snacks.

How & when to plant

Direct-sow after the last frost when soil reaches 70°F, or start indoors 2–3 weeks early. Sow seeds 1 inch deep and space plants 24–36 inches apart in rows 5–6 feet apart. Full sun and rich, well-drained soil give the sweetest melons. Grows as an annual in USDA zones 4–11.

Harvest

Ready about 85–95 days from sowing. Honeydew is ripe when the rind turns creamy white to pale yellow and the blossom end softens slightly; cut from the vine since it does not slip.

Benefits & uses

Wonderful fresh, in fruit salads, blended into agua fresca, or paired with lime and mint. The dense flesh holds up well when cubed for platters.

FAQ

Sow after all frost has passed and soil is at least 70F, or start indoors 3-4 weeks early. Honeydew needs a long, warm season to ripen fully.
This variety matures in about 80-90 days. The melon is ready when the smooth rind turns creamy white to pale yellow and the blossom end gives slightly.
Honeydew usually does not slip from the vine, so judge by color and feel: a waxy-to-smooth rind, a faint sweet aroma, and a slightly springy blossom end.
Grow in hills of 2-3 plants 4-6 feet apart in full sun with warm, fertile, well-drained soil. Good spacing keeps the sprawling vines healthy.
Yes. It ripens best where summers are long and hot; in cooler areas start seed indoors and use black plastic mulch to warm the soil and lengthen the season.
Each packet holds about 70 seeds of this open-pollinated, non-GMO variety, so seed can be saved from your sweetest melons.
Honeydew needs steady heat and a long season; consistent warmth and full sun build sugars.
Stored cool, dry, and sealed in the original packet, the seeds stay viable for a couple of years or more, with the best germination in the first year or two.
