How to Grow Morning Glory Heavenly Blue
Before You Plant
Morning Glory seeds have a hard outer coat. For best germination, nick each seed with a nail file or sandpaper, then soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. This helps speed up germination.
Direct Sowing Outdoors (Recommended)
Morning Glory Heavenly Blue is a fast-growing annual vine that loves warm weather. Direct sowing outdoors after frost danger has passed gives the best results.
-
1. Choose a Season
Direct-sow outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to about 65°F. Morning Glory Heavenly Blue blooms from early summer through first frost. Flowers open each morning and usually close in the afternoon. -
2. Choose the Right Spot
Choose a sunny location with at least 6 hours of direct sun per day. Provide a sturdy vertical support such as a trellis, fence, arbor, or pergola. Vines can climb up to 10 ft in a single season. -
3. Prepare the Soil
Loosen the top layer of soil and remove weeds, rocks, and debris. Rake the area smooth before sowing. Use well-drained soil that is not overly rich, as rich soil can produce more leaves and fewer flowers. -
4. Sow the Seeds
After nicking and soaking the seeds, sow them 6 to 12 inches apart at the base of the support. 1 oz plants approximately 40 ft of trellis or fence. -
5. Create Good Seed-to-Soil Contact
Cover seeds with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of soil and press gently for good contact. Morning Glory needs darkness to germinate, so keep seeds fully covered. -
6. Water the Area
Keep the soil moist for 7 to 14 days until germination. Germination is best around 70°F. Once established, Morning Glory tolerates short dry spells but prefers regular moderate watering. Avoid waterlogged soil. -
7. Train the Vines
Guide young tendrils onto the support as they begin to grow. Once attached, the vines will climb on their own.
Starting Indoors (Alternative Method)
Morning Glory can be started indoors in short-season areas, but direct sowing is usually simpler. Use biodegradable pots if starting indoors, as seedlings dislike root disturbance.
-
1. Start Seeds Early
Start seeds indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last expected frost. Nick each seed and soak in warm water for 24 hours before planting. -
2. Sow in Pots
Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in biodegradable pots filled with seed-starting mix. -
3. Keep Warm and Moist
Keep the soil evenly moist and warm, around 70°F, until germination. Provide bright light once seedlings emerge. -
4. Transplant Carefully
Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed. Plant the entire biodegradable pot at the base of a trellis, fence, or other support.
