Hollyhock
6 Easy Steps to Grow Hollyhock
-
Choose a Season – Plant in spring after last frost, or in late summer/early fall in mild climates. Germinates best at 60–70 °F (15–21 °C).
Note: Hollyhocks are biennials or short-lived perennials — they usually bloom in their second year.
-
Choose the Right Spot – Full sun is best. Needs protection from strong winds due to tall stalks.
-
Prepare the Soil – Remove weeds and loosen the soil. Hollyhocks prefer rich, well-drained soil; amend with compost if needed.
-
Broadcast the Seeds – Sow seeds evenly and thinly.
Note: 1 oz covers ~200 sq.ft. for optimal growth.
-
Create the Right Seeds-to-Soil Contact – Lightly press seeds into the soil without burying deeply; cover with ¼" (0.6 cm) of soil.
-
Water the Area – Keep soil consistently moist until germination (10–14 days). Water regularly during growth, avoiding overhead watering to reduce leaf rust.
