Calendula
6 Easy Steps to Grow Calendula
-
Choose a Season – Best grown in cool weather. Plant after last frost in spring or in late summer/early fall for blooms in cooler climates. Germinates best at 60–65 °F (15–18 °C).
-
Note: In hot climates, plant where it gets afternoon shade.
-
Choose the Right Spot – Full sun is ideal, but tolerates light shade. Needs well-drained soil and regular watering.
-
Prepare the Soil – Remove weeds and loosen soil to improve aeration. Incorporate compost or balanced fertilizer before planting.
-
Broadcast the Seeds – Sow seeds evenly and thinly.
-
Note: 1 oz covers ~1,100 sq.ft. for lighter sowing, ~110 sq.ft. for dense garden beds.
-
Create the Right Seeds-to-Soil Contact – Lightly rake or press seeds into the soil, covering with ¼–½" (0.6–1.2 cm) of soil.
-
Water the Area – Keep soil consistently moist until germination (7–14 days). Once established, calendula is moderately drought-tolerant but blooms best with regular watering.
