Imperial 45 is a dependable, high-yielding cantaloupe (Cucumis melo) prized for its heavy netting, thick sweet orange flesh, and small seed cavity. If you want reliable melon seeds that produce uniform 4–5 lb fruits with excellent flavor, this classic variety delivers season after season. It was bred for productivity and disease tolerance, making it a favorite for home gardens and market growers alike.

Who it's for

Great for gardeners with a long, warm summer who want sweet, aromatic melons for fresh eating, and for anyone wanting a proven, forgiving cantaloupe.

How & when to plant

Melons love heat. Direct-sow after the last frost once soil reaches 70°F, or start indoors 2–3 weeks early and transplant carefully. Sow seeds 1 inch deep, thin to the strongest plants, and space 24–36 inches apart in rows 5–6 feet apart. Give full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Grows as an annual in USDA zones 4–11.

Harvest

Ready about 80–90 days from sowing. Melons are ripe when the netting is pronounced and the fruit slips easily from the vine at the stem with gentle pressure, releasing a sweet aroma.

Benefits & uses

Enjoy fresh in fruit salads, blended into smoothies, wrapped with cured ham, or chilled as a summer snack. The compact seed cavity means more flesh per fruit.

FAQ

Sow after all danger of frost once soil is warm at 70F or above, or start indoors 3-4 weeks early in peat pots. Melons are very frost-sensitive and love heat.
This melon matures in about 80-90 days. It is ripe when the netted rind turns tan and the fruit slips easily from the vine with a light tug.
Grow in hills of 2-3 plants spaced 4-6 feet apart, giving the vines plenty of room to run. Good spacing improves airflow and reduces disease.
Cantaloupe needs full sun, 8 or more hours a day, and warm, well-drained, fertile soil. Steady warmth and consistent moisture produce the sweetest fruit.
It performs best where summers are long and hot, but northern gardeners can succeed by starting seed indoors and using black plastic mulch to warm the soil.
The packet contains about 75 seeds of this open-pollinated, non-GMO variety, so you can save seed from your best-tasting melons.
Start seeds indoors and use black plastic mulch to warm the soil; this variety needs consistent warmth to ripen fully.
The fruit will "slip" from the vine with light pressure and smell fragrant at the blossom end.
