Grow Towering Perennial Spires from Heirloom, Non-GMO Russell Lupine Seeds

Few perennials make an entrance like Russell lupines. Our heirloom Russell lupine seeds (Lupinus polyphyllus, Russell strain) grow into bold clumps of palm-shaped leaves with 3 to 4 foot flower spikes in blue, purple, pink, red, yellow, white, and bicolors. This 1 oz bulk pack holds over 1,400 seeds, enough for a whole perennial border or a naturalized slope.

Who it's for

A favorite for cottage gardens, cut-flower beds, and pollinator plantings in cool-summer climates, zones 3 to 8. Lupines suit patient gardeners who like a perennial that gets better every year.

How & when to plant

Nick the seed coat or soak the seeds for 24 hours, then sow 1/4 inch deep in early spring or in fall, spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Lupines resent root disturbance, so sow directly or start in deep pots and transplant young. Seedlings appear in 14 to 30 days. Most plants bloom in their second spring, some earlier. Our lupine growing guide has the full timeline.

Growing & care

Give lupines full sun or light afternoon shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil that is not too rich. They fix their own nitrogen, so skip the fertilizer. Water in dry spells and mulch to keep roots cool. Cut spent spikes to encourage a second flush and to keep the plants strong. Lupines struggle in hot, humid summers.

Harvest

Cut spikes for the vase when the lower third of the flowers is open and place them straight into water. To save seed, let a few pods dry and turn brown, then collect them before they split. All parts of the plant, including the seeds, are not edible.

Benefits & uses

Russell lupines bring height, structure, and rich color to borders and meadows, feed bumblebees and other pollinators, and improve the soil with nitrogen. They pair beautifully with poppies, columbine, and ornamental grasses.

Why gardeners love our Russell lupine seed

Our lupine seed is heirloom, non-GMO, and untreated, chosen for strong germination and packed fresh by a licensed seed dealer based in the USA. The bulk 1 oz pack is a great value for big borders and restoration plantings.
