Great

As someone who is new to gardening, these seeds are great! I planted them less than 2 weeks ago and I already have seedlings with a second row of leaves. They came up soooooo fast. All I did was poke small holes in my soil dropped a seed in each one, lightly covered it and watered once a day. I can’t wait to see the flowers!!!! At the rate they’re growing it shouldn’t take long.My first planting was in a patio railing container so I hope they flower (hoping the container is deep enough), the second batch I just planted today out in our front garden.Update: Awesome flowers, beautiful for cut flowers in the kitchen! I paired them with black eyed Susans

Little Expensive

Only time will tell how good these grow, but they look good. As for the price it is a bit expensive but we will see.

Abundant and healthy seeds

I was thrilled by the abundance of seeds in this package, all of which are healthy and viable looking. I love sunflowers but didn't even have enough room in the yard to use up the approximately 100 seeds that I received. The packaging is charming and would make a great gift with some new gloves or tools for your favorite gardener. I can't wait to see my seedlings begin to grow in a few weeks!

10% germination rate

The germination rate was awful. I test all my seeds by placing 10 seeds on a wet paper towel stored in a sealed plastic food storage container. That's generally enough humidity to get things to sprout in a day or two, without them getting moldy.Of the 10 seeds I put down, 2 germinated on the first attempt, and 4 had some kind of mildew on them.I tried again. This time, 3 germinated, and 5 were mildew/moldy.I don't know how they're storing these seeds, but multiple reviewers have noted the low germination rates. I wanted to grow these for sunflower sprouts to eat, but it looks like Ihave to grow the sunflower first because most of these seeds are worthless. When they DO germinate, the stems are sturdy and the sprouts come quickly. I took two of my tested sprouts and put them in a growbag on my balcony to see how they would respond. The roots have taken hold and they are putting up their first leaves. fingers crossed they live long enough to throw flowers.

Growing even in places they probably shouldnt be!

We bought some kind of roll up mat from a store that said just roll it out and water it daily and itll grow sunflower seeds. Well, it didn't, so my last ditch effort for the summer for my wife was to try something different, so we got these. We actually saw sprouts within 5 day and we grew these in partial shade, full soil, rocky soil, and full sun and every single one sprouted and grew. Every seed grew out of pack. The ones in partial shade and rocky soil after about 2 months are only approximately 5 foot tall but are growing well. The seeds we planted in full sun and full soil are now 7ft tall and have multiple flowers per stem. They got so large we had to stake some of them because the weight of the flowers started trying to topple them over. All of them however have bloomed and look amazing.Im not trying any gimmick seed stuff in the future. These worked great and just reinforced the need to go with what you know, that plants come from seeds, not mats. Very happy with this company and their product.

Great seeds

These did not get super tall but it has been a dry summer for me. That being said, I threw these out in the garden and raked over them and the germination was great. I cannot complain. They are a bit more spendy than other competitors on the market but these seeds did great with little tending.

Excellent Quality and Vibrant Growth

Organo Republic's Sunflower Black Oil Seeds are a top-notch choice for any gardener. The seeds boast a high germination rate, ensuring a lush and healthy sunflower garden. They are non-GMO and organic, which aligns with eco-friendly gardening practices. The packaging is sturdy and resealable, maintaining seed freshness. Overall, these seeds promise robust growth and vibrant blooms, making them a great investment for gardening enthusiasts.

nice flowers

I live in central New York, and planted these seeds directly in the ground in the same bed as my beans. The theory is that the sunflowers grow and the beans use them as support poles. So far its working well. All of the seeds sprouted, and the sunflowers are keeping up with the bean runners as far as growth, so I'm very happy with these.

Unfortunately haven't germinated well

I am a fairly experienced gardener, and have a very large garden, in which I planted these. I have several places where I planted these, but for some reason I haven't had great germination with these. I am not sure if it is something I am doing wrong, or if it is just poor germination rates, but they just haven't worked Out for me like I had hoped. I am going to try them again, and maybe there is something different I can do to get them to germinate for me. The seeds do look good, so hopefully I can find a solution.

Good Seeds

I live in northern Idaho. I planted these seeds a little early, mid May. They took a around 2-3 weeks to sprout. I’m not sure if they all survived to sprout since the rodents here are so bad. The sprouts are big and healthy and I can’t wait to see how big the flowers get. Might be better for far northerners to start inside and transfer.

Black Oil Sunflower Seeds - great germination

It's been too hot and dry to plant these out in the yard, but I did try a germination test for the purpose of review. Nine of the ten seeds germinated for me, and I'm looking forward to planting these sunflowers along the south side of my chicken run next year.

Sunflower Black Oil Seeds Pack 9G - Over 100 of Non-GMO Heirloom Sunflower Seeds for Planting Vegetables in Individual Seed Packet, Vegetable Seeds for Planting Home Garden Indoor & Outdoor GardeningDon't plant these directly in the soil, plant them indoors because the birds & squirrels will eat all your seeds. For the seeds I did get to germinate, they are growing quickly. Germination rate seems to be about 75% for me with the packet. I don't know about the 100 seeds though, my little bag was not that filled up.Organo Republic though does have good seeds. They have some nice instructions on the back & lots of information to help successfully grow. Overall, these are good seeds & I recommend them to anyone looking for the signature sunflower for your summer gardening.

Grow Tall, Cheerful Sunflowers from Heirloom, Non-GMO Black Oil Sunflower Seeds

Black oil sunflowers are the classic tall, sunny giants that light up a garden and feed the birds all winter. Our heirloom black oil sunflower seeds (Helianthus annuus) grow fast into strong single stems topped with golden blooms, then fill with the small, oil-rich seeds that songbirds love and you can roast for a snack. They are easy, dramatic, and endlessly useful.

Who it's for

Wonderful for beginners, families, and anyone who loves birds. Black oil sunflowers are among the easiest and most satisfying plants to grow from seed, shooting up quickly to delight kids, and their seed heads make a natural bird feeder come fall.

How & when to plant

Sow the seeds directly after your last frost, once the soil is warm, planting them about an inch deep in full sun. They sprout quickly, in about 7 to 10 days. Space plants about 6 to 18 inches apart depending on how large you want the heads, giving them a sunny, sheltered spot since the tall stems can catch the wind. Our Sunflower growing guide has the details.

Growing & care

Sunflowers are easygoing. Give them full sun and regular water while young, then let them race skyward. Tall plants may need staking in exposed gardens, and a little support helps once the heavy seed heads form. They rarely need feeding and shrug off summer heat.

Harvest

For seeds, let the flower heads mature until the backs turn brown and the seeds are plump, then cut the heads and dry them in an airy place. Rub the seeds free to roast for snacking or to offer the birds. Or simply leave the heads standing in the garden as a natural winter feeder.

Benefits & uses

Black oil sunflowers are a triple treat: bright cut flowers in summer, a feast of nutritious seeds for you and the songbirds in fall, and a magnet for bees and pollinators while in bloom. They bring height, color, and life to any sunny garden.

Why gardeners grow our sunflower seed

Our black oil sunflower seed is heirloom, non-GMO, and untreated, chosen for strong germination and packed fresh by a licensed seed dealer based in the USA. Plant it once and save seed from your best heads year after year. Choose the pack size that fits your garden and get sowing.

FAQ

They typically grow tall on a single stem, often 5 to 10 feet, so give them a sunny, sheltered spot and stake them in windy gardens.
Sow directly after the last frost, about an inch deep in full sun once the soil is warm. They sprout quickly, in about 7 to 10 days.
Space plants about 6 to 18 inches apart. Closer spacing gives smaller heads on slimmer stems, while wider spacing produces larger flowers.
Yes, they are a favorite of songbirds. Leave the mature heads standing in the garden as a natural feeder, or dry them and offer the seeds later.
Let the heads mature until the backs turn brown and the seeds are plump, then cut and dry them in an airy spot and rub the seeds free to roast or store.
Very. While in bloom, the big flowers are alive with bees and other pollinators, and later the seeds feed the birds.
