Grow Classic Blue Bachelor's Buttons from Heirloom, Non-GMO Tall Blue Cornflower Seeds

Tall Blue is the cornflower of wheat fields and old cottage gardens. Our heirloom Tall Blue cornflower seeds (Centaurea cyanus) grow into airy 30 to 36 inch plants with silvery stems and fringed, intensely blue buttons from late spring through summer. This 1 oz bulk pack holds roughly 5,500 seeds, enough for a long cutting row or a generous meadow patch.

Who it's for

A must for cut-flower growers, wildflower meadows, and pollinator gardens. Cornflowers are easy, fast, and forgiving, which makes them a great choice for beginners and for kids.

How & when to plant

Sow directly in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in fall in mild-winter regions for earlier, stronger plants. Plant 1/4 inch deep and 9 to 12 inches apart in full sun. Seedlings appear in 7 to 14 days. Sow again a month later to extend the season. Our Tall Blue cornflower growing guide has the details.

Growing & care

Give cornflowers full sun and average, well-drained soil. They tolerate poor soil and drought once established. The tall stems appreciate netting or a few stakes in windy spots. Deadhead or cut often to keep the flowers coming; the plants fade in extreme heat.

Harvest

Cut when the flowers have just fully opened, early in the day, for bouquets that last about a week. Petals are edible and lovely on salads and cakes. Allow some heads to dry on the plant if you want to save seed.

Benefits & uses

Tall Blue gives that rare true blue for bouquets and meadows, feeds bees and butterflies, and later offers seed for finches. It mixes beautifully with poppies, daisies, and grasses.

Why gardeners love our cornflower seed

Our cornflower seed is heirloom, non-GMO, and untreated, chosen for strong germination and packed fresh by a licensed seed dealer based in the USA. The bulk 1 oz pack is priced for cutting gardens and meadow plantings.
