Grow Golden Prairie Daisies from Heirloom, Non-GMO Black-Eyed Susan Seeds

Black-eyed Susan is the flower of American summer roadsides and meadows. Our heirloom black-eyed Susan seeds (Rudbeckia hirta) grow into sturdy 24 to 36 inch plants covered in golden-yellow daisies with velvety dark brown centers from midsummer into fall. This 1 oz bulk pack holds roughly 100,000 seeds, enough to seed a large meadow, slope, or roadside strip.

Who it's for

Ideal for wildflower meadows, native and pollinator gardens, cut-flower beds, and low-maintenance borders. It is tough, drought tolerant, and thrives in zones 3 to 9 with very little help.

How & when to plant

Sow in early spring or fall. Scatter the seed on prepared soil and press it in lightly, since it needs light to germinate. Keep moist until seedlings appear in 7 to 21 days, then thin to 12 to 18 inches apart. Plants started early often bloom the first year. See our black-eyed Susan growing guide for the details.

Growing & care

Full sun brings the most flowers, though light shade is fine. Average, well-drained soil suits it, and once established it needs little water. Deadhead for tidier plants and longer bloom, or leave the seed heads for birds. It behaves as a short-lived perennial or biennial and renews itself by reseeding.

Harvest

Cut stems for the vase when the flowers have just fully opened, and they last a week or more. For seed, let a few heads dry and darken on the plant, then rub out the seed. Goldfinches love the ripe seed heads.

Benefits & uses

Black-eyed Susan feeds bees, butterflies, and seed-eating birds, holds up in heat and drought, and gives weeks of cheerful cut flowers. It is a backbone plant for any meadow or prairie planting.

Why gardeners love our black-eyed Susan seed

Our black-eyed Susan seed is heirloom, non-GMO, and untreated, chosen for strong germination and packed fresh by a licensed seed dealer based in the USA. The bulk 1 oz pack is priced for meadows and large plantings.

FAQ

Early spring or fall. Press the seed onto the soil surface, it needs light to germinate.
Often yes, especially from early spring sowing. Fall-sown seed blooms the following summer.
Rudbeckia hirta is a short-lived perennial or biennial that reseeds itself, so a patch keeps going year after year.
Full sun is best, light shade is fine. Once established it is drought tolerant and needs little care.
Yes. Bees and butterflies work the flowers, and finches eat the seed heads in fall.
Over 100,000 seeds, enough to cover about 2,000 square feet of meadow.
