How & when to plant

Sow in early spring or fall. Scatter the seed on prepared soil and press it in lightly, since it needs light to germinate. Growing & care

Full sun brings the most flowers, though light shade is fine. Average, well-drained soil suits it, and once established it needs little water. Deadhead for tidier plants and longer bloom, or leave the seed heads for birds. It behaves as a short-lived perennial or biennial and renews itself by reseeding.

Harvest

Cut stems for the vase when the flowers have just fully opened, and they last a week or more. For seed, let a few heads dry and darken on the plant, then rub out the seed. Goldfinches love the ripe seed heads.
