Black Seeded Simpson (Lactuca sativa) is a beloved heirloom green leaf lettuce with light, crinkled leaves and a crisp, sweet flavor. These Simpson green leaf lettuce seeds grow fast and abundantly, making them one of the earliest and easiest lettuces for the spring garden. It has been a home-garden standard since the 1800s for good reason.

Who it's for

Perfect for beginners and busy gardeners who want a quick, reliable harvest, and for cooks who love tender, mild leaves for everyday salads.

How & when to plant

Direct sow 2-4 weeks before your last spring frost, or start indoors 4 weeks earlier. Sow 1/4 inch deep and thin to 6-10 inches apart. Simpson likes full sun to part shade and cool weather, growing well in USDA zones 4-9. Sow in succession every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply.

Harvest

Baby leaves are ready in about 28 days, full plants in 45 days, among the fastest of all lettuces. Pick outer leaves as needed for repeated cuttings, or harvest the whole plant at the base.

Benefits & uses

The tender, ruffled leaves are ideal for mixed salads and sandwiches and are a natural for quick, cut-and-come-again harvests all season.

FAQ

Simpson is a fast, reliable loose-leaf lettuce with light-green, crinkled, tender leaves and a sweet, delicate flavor. It is one of the oldest and easiest lettuces, ideal for beginners.
Sow in early spring as soon as soil can be worked and again in late summer for fall. It prefers cool weather and is quick to produce, so sow small amounts often.
It is one of the fastest lettuces—baby leaves in about 25–30 days and full plants in 40–45 days. Its speed makes it great for early-season salads.
Use cut-and-come-again harvesting: snip outer leaves an inch above the crown and let the plant regrow. You can get several cuttings before it eventually bolts.
Space plants 6–8 inches apart in rows about 12 inches apart, or sow densely for baby-leaf harvests.
Yes, Simpson is a classic open-pollinated heirloom and these seeds are non-GMO. The packet contains about 1,200 seeds.
Yes. Regularly picking the outer leaves keeps the plant producing tender new growth.
Stored cool, dry, and sealed in the original packet, the seeds stay viable for a couple of years or more, with the best germination in the first year or two.
