Okra Clemson Spineless seeds grow the gold-standard okra for Southern gardens and kitchens. Clemson Spineless (Abelmoschus esculentus) is an award-winning heirloom producing straight, ridged, spineless dark-green pods on tall, sturdy plants. Heat-loving and heavy-yielding, these okra seeds keep pods coming all summer, making them a mainstay for gumbo, frying, and pickling.

Who it's for

Perfect for gardeners in hot-summer regions and cooks who love okra fried, stewed, roasted, or simmered into gumbo.

How & when to plant

Sow directly 2–3 weeks after your last frost, once soil is warm at 65–75°F, as okra loves heat. To speed germination, soak seeds overnight, then plant 1/2–1 inch deep, thinning to 12–18 inches apart in rows 3 feet apart, in full sun. Germination takes 7–14 days. Grow as a warm-season annual in USDA zones 5–11.

Harvest

Pods are ready about 55–60 days from sowing. Cut pods when they are 2–4 inches long and still tender, ideally every 1–2 days, since pods turn woody quickly if left on the plant. Wear gloves, as some plants have prickly stems and leaves.

Benefits & uses

Clemson Spineless is classic in gumbo and stews, and it fries, roasts, grills, and pickles beautifully. Frequent harvesting keeps the tall plants flowering and setting new pods through the heat of summer.

FAQ

Okra needs heat. Sow Clemson Spineless seeds directly outdoors about 1/2 to 1 inch deep once the soil is reliably warm, at least 65-70F, after the last frost. Soaking the seeds overnight before planting speeds up germination.
This popular variety produces tender, spineless pods in about 55-65 days. Once it starts, it bears heavily through the warm season if picked regularly.
Give Clemson Spineless full sun and space plants 12-18 inches apart, as they can grow 4-6 feet tall. It thrives in hot summer weather and well-drained soil.
Pick pods every 1-2 days while they are young and about 3-4 inches long. Pods left too long turn tough and woody, and frequent harvesting keeps the plant producing new pods.
Each packet holds approximately 60 seeds, enough for a productive row of okra that will supply pods all summer long.
Yes. Clemson Spineless is a well-loved open-pollinated, non-GMO heirloom okra, so you can save seed from mature, dried pods to replant next year.
Every day or two. Pods grow fast and turn tough and fibrous if left longer than a few days.
Yes. Soaking okra seeds overnight softens the hard coat and speeds up germination.
