FAQ

Sow in spring or fall, pressing the seed onto the surface since it needs light to germinate. Columbine (Aquilegia) germinates best after a cold period, so fall sowing or chilling the seed in the fridge for a few weeks helps.
Columbine grows about 1-3 feet tall with distinctive spurred flowers. As a perennial it usually blooms from its second spring onward, flowering in late spring to early summer.
It thrives in part shade to full sun in well-drained soil and is one of the few flowers that flourishes in dappled woodland light. Columbine is hardy across USDA zones 3-8.
Yes. The nodding, nectar-rich spurred blooms are a classic favorite of hummingbirds and are also visited by bees and butterflies.
Yes, it is a short-lived perennial that returns for several years and self-sows freely, so it tends to naturalize and keep appearing in the garden.
The packet holds about 100 seeds. They are heirloom, open-pollinated, and non-GMO, so you can collect seed from the dried pods to grow more.

About Columbine Seeds

Columbine (Aquilegia) brings delicate, spurred, nodding flowers that seem to hover above lacy blue-green foliage. Our heirloom, non-GMO columbine seeds grow into airy, woodland-edge perennials in a soft range of colors, prized for their unusual bell-and-spur shape and their strong appeal to hummingbirds and early bees.

Who it's for

Great for cottage and woodland gardeners, pollinator and hummingbird lovers, and anyone wanting an easy perennial that reseeds and naturalizes.

How & when to plant

A hardy perennial in USDA zones 3-8. Sow in spring or fall; seeds benefit from a cold period, so fall sowing or a few weeks of cold stratification improves germination. Surface-sow and barely press in since they need light, keep cool and moist, and thin plants to 12-18 inches apart in part shade to full sun with rich, well-drained soil.

Bloom & care

Expect flowering in mid to late spring on plants 18-30 inches tall. Grown for its flowers rather than food, columbine is a hummingbird favorite. Plants are short-lived but self-sow to keep a patch going; cut back tired foliage after bloom. One packet plants about 70 sq ft (~70 plants).

Benefits & uses

Columbine adds early-season color to shade borders, woodland gardens and cottage plantings, and works as a charming, if short-lived, cut flower. It is a valuable nectar source for hummingbirds and bees.

Frequently asked questions

Do the seeds need cold to sprout?
They germinate best after a cold period, so sow in fall or chill the seed in the fridge for a few weeks before spring sowing.

Will columbine come back each year?
It is a short-lived perennial that reliably reseeds, so a planting tends to persist and spread on its own.

Sun or shade?
It thrives in part shade but tolerates full sun in cooler climates with steady moisture.
