Crimson Sweet is a classic heirloom watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) famous for its huge 20–25 lb striped fruits and deep red, sugary, crisp flesh with few seeds. These watermelon seeds produce a picnic-perfect melon that combines high yields, disease resistance, and outstanding sweetness. Introduced in 1963, it remains a benchmark for flavor among large watermelons.

Who it's for

For gardeners with space and a warm season who want big, sweet, shareable melons for summer gatherings and roadside stands.

How & when to plant

Direct-sow after the last frost once soil reaches 70°F, or start indoors 2–3 weeks early. Plant seeds 1 inch deep and space plants 36–48 inches apart in rows 6–8 feet apart. Watermelons need full sun, warm soil, and consistent water. Grows as an annual in USDA zones 3–11.

Harvest

Ready about 80–85 days from sowing. Signs of ripeness: the ground spot turns creamy yellow, the tendril nearest the fruit dries, and the melon sounds hollow when thumped.

Benefits & uses

Ideal fresh by the slice, cubed in fruit salads, juiced, or frozen into granita. Its firm flesh travels and stores well after picking.

FAQ

Crimson Sweet is a beloved heirloom known for large, round, striped melons with crisp, deep-red, very sweet flesh and relatively few seeds.
It matures in about 80-85 days. Look for a curly tendril near the stem that has dried brown and a creamy-yellow ground spot where the melon rests.
Fruit typically weighs 15-25 pounds. Give plants steady water and full heat through the season for the largest, sweetest melons.
Plant in hills of 2-3 plants spaced 6-8 feet apart, as the vines sprawl widely. Full sun and warm, well-drained soil are essential.
Sow after the last frost once soil reaches 70F or more, or start indoors 3-4 weeks early. Watermelon is very frost-sensitive and needs consistent heat.
The packet contains about 70 seeds of this open-pollinated, non-GMO heirloom, so you can save seed from your best watermelons.
Look for a creamy-yellow ground spot and a dried tendril near the stem.
Stored cool, dry, and sealed in the original packet, the seeds stay viable for a couple of years or more, with the best germination in the first year or two.
