Johnny jump-up (Viola tricolor) is the charming little cousin of the pansy, covered in cheerful purple, yellow and white faces on compact, spreading plants. Our heirloom, non-GMO viola seeds grow into tough, cool-season bloomers that tuck neatly into edges, containers and cottage beds, with dainty edible flowers that also delight kids and pollinators.

Who it's for

Perfect for container and edging gardeners, cottage-garden fans, and cooks who want a pretty edible flower. Easy and forgiving for beginners.

How & when to plant

Grown as a hardy annual or short-lived perennial in USDA zones 3-9. Sow in early spring or late summer for fall and spring bloom; they love cool weather. Sow about 1/8 inch deep in darkness, keep moist, and thin plants to 6-8 inches apart in full sun to part shade with rich, well-drained soil.

Bloom & care

Expect flowering in spring and fall, and through mild winters in warmer zones, on low plants just 6-10 inches tall. Grown for its flowers rather than food, it draws early bees and self-sows to return year after year. Shear back if it gets leggy in summer heat. One packet plants about 50 sq ft (~140 plants).

Benefits & uses

Johnny jump-ups are perfect for edging, window boxes and containers, and their small edible flowers make a pretty garnish on salads, cakes and desserts. They add early and late color when little else is blooming.

FAQ

Sow in early spring or late summer for fall and early-spring bloom. Johnny Jump-Up (Viola tricolor) needs darkness to germinate, so cover the seed lightly and keep it cool and moist.
These charming little violas stay compact at about 4-8 inches tall and wide. Space plants 4-6 inches apart for a tidy edging or carpet of tricolor purple, yellow, and white faces.
Yes. The dainty flowers are edible with a mild flavor and make a beautiful garnish for salads, cakes, and desserts, and they can be candied or frozen into ice cubes.
It prefers full sun to part shade and cool weather in moist, well-drained soil. It shrugs off light frost and is hardy across USDA zones 3-9, blooming best in spring and fall.
Yes to both. It self-sows generously and often naturalizes into cheerful colonies, and its small size makes it perfect for pots, window boxes, and border edges.
The packet contains about 200 seeds. They are heirloom, open-pollinated, and non-GMO, so you can collect seed from the ripe pods to keep them coming back.
They self-sow prolifically, so once established they tend to pop up again season after season.
They shine in the cool of spring and fall and can bloom through winter in mild climates.
