How & when to plant

Onions have a long season, so start the seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before your last frost, or sow them directly in early spring. Plant them about a quarter to half an inch deep; they germinate in about 7 to 10 days. Thin or transplant seedlings to about 3 to 4 inches apart in full sun, in loose, fertile soil. Harvest

Harvest onions when most of the tops have flopped over and begun to yellow, usually around 95 to 115 days. Lift the bulbs and cure them in a warm, airy, shaded spot for a week or two before storing, though Red Burgundy is best enjoyed fresh rather than kept for long.
