When should I sow Red Chief California poppy seeds?
Sow in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked, or in fall where winters are mild. The seeds need cool soil to sprout well.
Can I start California poppies indoors?
It is better to sow them directly outside. They have a deep taproot and do not transplant well. If you must start indoors, use deep pots and move them out very young.
How deep do I plant the seeds?
Barely cover them. Scatter the seed over loose soil and press it in or dust it with a very thin layer of soil. Light helps germination.
How much sun and water do they need?
Full sun and well-drained soil. Water until the seedlings are established, then only in long dry spells. Too much water or rich soil means fewer flowers.
How many seeds are in a 1 oz pack and how much area does it cover?
Over 21,000 seeds, enough to cover about 200 square feet of bed or meadow.
Will Red Chief come back next year?
It is an annual, but it reseeds freely. Leave a few pods to ripen and you will see new seedlings the following spring.
