Red Chief is the California poppy with a deeper, richer soul. Instead of the usual glowing gold, it opens silky, cup-shaped blooms in a warm red-orange that seems to catch fire in full sun, all above a soft mound of feathery blue-green foliage. It is every bit as tough as the classic species, thriving on heat, poor soil, and neglect while it self-seeds into a drought-proof drift. If you want low-effort, high-impact color for a hot, sunny spot, Red Chief is hard to beat.
This is the quick guide to the Red Chief California poppy. For the full step-by-step on starting seeds, sowing, feeding, and troubleshooting California poppies, see our complete guide to growing California poppies from seed.
Quick start
Direct sow Red Chief right where it will grow, since its long taproot resents transplanting. Scatter the fine seed on prepared soil in full sun after your last frost, press it in for good contact, and barely cover it. Keep the surface lightly moist until sprouts appear in 1 to 3 weeks, then thin plants to about 6 inches apart. Expect the first rich red-orange cups in roughly 60 days, and let a few go to seed so they return next year.
Best tip
Sow it where you want it and leave the taproot alone. California poppies form a deep taproot early, so they sulk or die if moved. Direct sow Red Chief into its final spot, thin rather than transplant, and it will reward you with far more blooms. In mild-winter regions (roughly zones 8 and warmer) you can even sow in fall for earlier spring flowers.
Red Chief is grown purely for its glowing, deep red-orange blooms, a warmer and moodier take on the classic golden California poppy. The silky, cup-shaped flowers open in sun and close at dusk, sitting above feathery blue-green foliage that looks good even between flushes. It is a natural fit for drought-tolerant beds, gravel gardens, borders, and wildflower plantings, and the open blooms draw bees and other pollinators. As a low, spreading annual it also makes a beautiful front-of-border ribbon of color that reseeds itself year after year.
What color is the Red Chief California poppy?
Red Chief is a rich, warm red-orange, a deeper and moodier shade than the classic bright golden California poppy. The silky, cup-shaped blooms glow above feathery blue-green foliage and open in sun, closing at dusk and on cloudy days.
Can I transplant California poppy seedlings?
It is best not to. California poppies form a long taproot early and dislike being moved, so seedlings often stall or die after transplanting. Direct sow Red Chief where it will grow and thin the seedlings instead of moving them.
How long does Red Chief take to bloom from seed?
Expect flowers in about 60 days from sowing. Sow after your last frost in full sun, and in mild-winter areas you can sow in fall for earlier spring blooms.
Does Red Chief California poppy come back every year?
It is an annual, but it self-seeds freely. If you let some blooms go to seed at the end of the season, the plants will drop seed and return on their own the following year, often spreading into a drought-tolerant drift.
