Grow Silky Cottage Poppies from Heirloom, Non-GMO Shirley Single Mix Poppy Seeds

Shirley poppies are the refined cousins of the wild red corn poppy, bred in an English vicarage garden in the 1880s. Our heirloom Shirley Single Mix poppy seeds (Papaver rhoeas) grow into airy 24 to 30 inch plants with tissue-paper single blooms in pink, rose, salmon, red, and white, many edged or picoteed in white. This 1 oz bulk pack holds roughly 195,000 seeds, enough for a real meadow.

Who it's for

Perfect for wildflower meadows, cottage borders, and cut-flower growers who love a loose, romantic look. Shirley poppies are easy from seed and reseed themselves gently for years.

How & when to plant

Sow directly where the plants will bloom, in early spring or in fall, since poppies do not transplant. Mix the tiny seed with sand, scatter it over prepared soil, and press it in without covering; it needs light to sprout. Seedlings appear in 10 to 20 days. Thin to 6 to 9 inches apart. See our Shirley poppy growing guide for more.

Growing & care

Give the plants full sun and average, well-drained soil. They need little water once established and no fertilizer. Cool spring weather gives the longest bloom, so sow as early as you can. Remove spent flowers to prolong flowering, or leave the decorative pods for seed.

Harvest

For the vase, cut in the early morning when the buds are upright and just cracking open, then sear the stem ends in boiling water or a flame for a few seconds. Let some pods dry to tan on the plant and shake out the seed for next year.

Benefits & uses

Shirley poppies bring soft, glowing color to meadows and borders, feed bees, and make dreamy, short-lived cut flowers. They mix beautifully with cornflowers, daisies, and grasses.

Why gardeners love our Shirley poppy seed

Our poppy seed is heirloom, non-GMO, and untreated, chosen for strong germination and packed fresh by a licensed seed dealer based in the USA. The bulk 1 oz pack is sized for meadow sowing and large cottage plantings.

FAQ

Early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in fall. Cool weather gives the best plants and longest bloom.
Do not cover the seed. Scatter it on the soil surface and press it in. Mixing the seed with sand helps spread it evenly.
No, they resent root disturbance. Sow directly where you want them to bloom and thin the seedlings.
Cut early in the morning as the buds crack open and sear the stem ends in boiling water or a flame for a few seconds.
They are annuals but reseed readily. Leave some pods to ripen and you will have poppies again next spring.
Over 195,000 seeds, enough to cover about 1,500 square feet of meadow.
