Boston Pickling is a classic heirloom cucumber (Cucumis sativus) bred specifically for crisp, blocky pickles. These cucumber seeds produce heavy yields of smooth, medium-green 5–6 inch fruits with tender skin and firm flesh that stays crunchy through brining. Dating to 1880, it's a proven, prolific pickling variety that also eats well fresh when picked young.

Who it's for

For home canners and gardeners who want abundant, uniform cucumbers for dill and bread-and-butter pickles, plus anyone who loves a crisp fresh slicer.

How & when to plant

Direct-sow after the last frost when soil reaches 65–70°F, or start indoors 2–3 weeks early. Sow seeds 1 inch deep and space plants 12 inches apart in rows 4–5 feet apart, or train on a trellis. Full sun and steady moisture keep fruit from turning bitter. Grows as an annual in USDA zones 3–11.

Harvest

Ready about 55–60 days from sowing. Pick pickling cukes at 2–5 inches for the best crunch, and harvest often to keep vines producing.

Benefits & uses

Perfect for whole dills, spears, relish, and bread-and-butter pickles; also good fresh in salads when small. Frequent picking extends the harvest for weeks.

FAQ

This heirloom is grown mainly for pickling, producing crisp, blocky, medium-green cucumbers that stay firm and crunchy in brine, though they are also good fresh when young.
Pick them small, at 2-3 inches for gherkins or 5-6 inches for dill pickles. Frequent picking keeps the vines producing heavily all season.
They mature quickly, in about 55-60 days from sowing, giving a heavy, concentrated harvest that is convenient for putting up pickles.
Space plants 12 inches apart in rows 3-4 feet apart, or grow in hills of 2-3 plants. A trellis saves space and keeps fruit clean and straight.
Sow directly after the last frost once soil is 65-70F, in full sun with rich, well-drained soil. Cucumbers grow as warm-season annuals in all zones.
Each packet contains about 100 seeds of this open-pollinated, non-GMO heirloom dating to the 1800s, so seed can be saved for future crops.
Harvest at 2–5 inches for the crispest, most uniform pickles.
Yes, trellising saves space, keeps fruit clean, and improves air flow.
