Sugar Pie is the classic heirloom pie pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo), a small 4–6 lb variety with sweet, fine-grained, deep orange flesh made for baking. These pumpkin seeds grow the ideal size for pies, purees, and roasting — far less watery and stringy than large carving pumpkins. Also called New England Pie, it's the standard by which baking pumpkins are judged.

Who it's for

For home bakers and cooks who want rich, smooth pumpkin puree, and gardeners who prefer manageable, kitchen-ready fruit over jack-o-lantern giants.

How & when to plant

Direct-sow after the last frost when soil reaches 70°F, or start indoors 2–3 weeks early. Sow seeds 1 inch deep and space plants 24–36 inches apart in rows 6–8 feet apart. Full sun and rich, well-drained soil support healthy vines. Grows as an annual in USDA zones 3–9.

Harvest

Ready about 100–110 days from sowing. Harvest when the rind is deep orange and hard enough to resist a fingernail; cure in the sun for 1–2 weeks to sweeten and improve storage.

Benefits & uses

Perfect for pumpkin pie, soups, breads, roasting, and homemade puree. Cured fruit stores for several months in a cool, dry spot.

FAQ

Sugar Pie is a small heirloom pie pumpkin with sweet, fine-grained, deep-orange flesh, prized for baking, pies, soups, and purees rather than carving.
These compact pumpkins usually weigh 4-8 pounds, an ideal single-recipe size with less waste than large carving types.
They mature in about 90-100 days. Harvest when the rind is deep orange and hard enough to resist a fingernail, before the first hard frost.
Plant in hills of 2-3 plants spaced 4-6 feet apart in full sun. The vines are moderately sized but still need room to spread.
Sow directly after the last frost when soil is 65-70F, or start indoors 3-4 weeks early. Time planting so fruit ripens before fall frost.
Each packet holds about 40 seeds of this open-pollinated, non-GMO heirloom, so seed can be saved from your best pumpkins.
It's a baking variety, small and sweet, best for pies and cooking rather than carving.
Cured Sugar Pie pumpkins keep for 2–3 months in cool, dry conditions.
