If you love the look of dahlias but want them from a packet of easy seed, this is your flower. The Dahlia Flowered zinnia mix produces big, fully double blooms in a bright rainbow of colors on tall, sturdy plants around 3 feet high. They are heat-loving, low-fuss, and among the best cut flowers you can grow, blooming more the more you cut and buzzing with butterflies and bees all summer. Sow them once the weather warms and you will have bold color from midsummer right up to frost.
This is the quick guide to the Dahlia Flowered zinnia mix. For the full step-by-step on starting seeds, sowing, feeding, and troubleshooting zinnias, see our complete guide to growing zinnias from seed.
Quick start
Direct sow the Dahlia Flowered Mix after your last frost once the soil is warm, since zinnias love heat and dislike cold, wet ground. Plant seeds about a quarter inch deep in full sun, keep them moist until they sprout in about a week, and thin to 8 to 12 inches apart for good airflow. Pinch the plants when young to encourage branching, and expect big double blooms in roughly 60 to 70 days. Deadhead or cut for the vase often, and the plants will bloom right up to frost.
Best tip
Cut early and often, and keep the leaves dry. Zinnias are a cut-and-come-again flower, so the more you harvest the more they bloom. Snip stems for the vase or deadhead spent flowers regularly to keep the plants pumping out color. Water at the base rather than overhead and give plants room to breathe, since good airflow is the best defense against the powdery mildew zinnias are prone to in humid, crowded conditions.
This dahlia-flowered zinnia mix produces large, fully double blooms in a bright mix of colors on tall, sturdy plants 2.5 to 3 feet high. The big, layered flowers look like dahlias and are outstanding cut flowers, holding beautifully in the vase for a week or more and blooming more the more you cut. In the garden they bring bold, long-lasting color from midsummer to frost and are a magnet for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. They are ideal for cutting gardens, sunny borders, and anywhere you want dependable, showy color with almost no fuss.
What is a dahlia-flowered zinnia?
A dahlia-flowered zinnia is a type of Zinnia elegans bred for large, fully double blooms that look like dahlias, with many layers of petals and a flat to slightly domed shape. This mix delivers those big double flowers in a bright range of colors on tall, sturdy 2.5 to 3 foot plants.
How tall do dahlia-flowered zinnias grow?
These are tall zinnias, reaching about 2.5 to 3 feet, which makes them excellent for the middle or back of a border and for cutting. Space plants 8 to 12 inches apart for good airflow, and pinch them young to encourage strong, branching stems.
Are dahlia-flowered zinnias good cut flowers?
They are outstanding cut flowers. The big double blooms hold in the vase for a week or more, and because zinnias are cut-and-come-again, the more you harvest the more they bloom. Cut stems in the morning once the flower is fully open for the longest vase life.
How long do dahlia-flowered zinnias take to bloom?
Expect blooms in about 60 to 70 days from sowing. Direct sow after your last frost once the soil is warm, since zinnias love heat, and they will flower from midsummer right up to the first fall frost if you keep cutting and deadheading.
