The Morning Glory Tall Mix is the fast, easy way to cover a fence or trellis in a summer of color. These vigorous heirloom vines climb 8 to 12 feet in a single season and open fresh trumpet-shaped flowers each morning in a blend of blue, purple, pink, and white. Give them full sun, a sturdy support, and lean soil, and they will race skyward and bloom until frost. Here is a quick-start guide to growing the Tall Mix from seed.
This is the quick guide to the Tall Mix. For the full step-by-step on scarifying and soaking seeds, sowing, training the vines, and troubleshooting morning glory, see our complete guide to growing morning glory from seed.
Quick start
Nick each seed and soak it in warm water for 12 to 24 hours, then direct sow half an inch deep and about 6 inches apart at the base of a sturdy trellis, fence, or netting once all frost has passed and the soil is warm. Give it full sun and lean, well-drained soil; skip heavy fertilizer so you get flowers instead of just leaves. Seedlings appear in 5 to 14 days and the vigorous vines climb fast, reaching 8 to 12 feet and blooming in about 70 to 90 days. Guide the young tendrils onto the support and enjoy a fresh wash of mixed-color trumpets every morning until frost.
Best tip
Give the Tall Mix a strong support before it takes off. This is a vigorous vine that can hit 12 feet, so a solid trellis, arbor, or netting up front means it fills the space fast and evenly. In cooler climates, sow into warm soil after your last frost or start early indoors in peat pots so the vines have the long, hot season they need to bloom.
The Tall Mix is made for covering vertical space fast. Use it as a quick privacy screen, a fence or trellis cover, or a living wall of daily color in blue, purple, pink, and white. Its trumpet flowers draw hummingbirds and bees, so it earns a place in any pollinator or cottage garden. Grow it as an ornamental only, since the seeds are toxic if eaten.
What colors are in the Morning Glory Tall Mix?
The Tall Mix blends classic morning glory shades in one packet, typically blue, purple, pink, and white flowers on the same fast-climbing vines. Each morning brings a fresh, ever-changing wash of color across the trellis. It is an easy way to enjoy the full morning glory palette without buying several separate varieties.
How tall does the Tall Mix morning glory grow?
This is a vigorous, tall vine that easily reaches 8 to 12 feet in a single season when given a sturdy support. It grows fast once summer heat sets in, making it ideal for covering fences, trellises, and arbors quickly. Give it something strong to climb before the vines take off.
Is the Tall Mix good for covering a fence or screen?
Yes, that is exactly what it does best. The Tall Mix is prized as a fast privacy screen and trellis cover, filling vertical space with dense green leaves and daily flowers. String netting or a trellis along a fence and the vines will blanket it by mid to late summer.
When do the flowers in the Tall Mix open?
True to their name, morning glory blooms unfurl in the early morning and close by afternoon, especially on hot sunny days. On cooler or overcast days the flowers may stay open longer. Expect a fresh flush of blooms every morning from mid summer until the first frost.
